The story of the mafiosi is really an interesting one. It dates back centuries and is full of folklore and mystery that continues to fascinate people around the world.
The term “Mafia” likely originates from the Sicilian word “mafiusu” which translates to “bold, daring and beautiful.” The term has become a generic term for organized crime today but Mafiosi were actually a group of people originating from a small group of villages in Sicily. This group was an alliance between local criminal gangs and more powerful outside forces.

Mafiosi often specialized in protecting their members from outside forces, not only from the law but also from rival criminal organizations. Through the years, these organizations have been quite secretive and often kept their hierarchical structure, initiation rituals and rules under the code of omerta a concept of the secrecy or code of silence which often severely punished or killed those who spoke out. The mafiosi also became known for their violence and aggressive attitudes.
It is believed that Mafiosi originated around the late 19th century with men such as Don Vito Cascio Ferro. This man is considered the “Godfather” of the Mafia and was a respected leader who actively established and maintained good relationships between the criminals and their families and the people they were protecting. Unfortunately, he was also well-known for his ruthless punishment techniques and the Mafia's territorial ambitions.
Today, the Mafia still exists in a variety of countries and it is believed that there are still around five million members involved in criminal activity worldwide. Most crime related to the Mafia falls into the category of drug trafficking, obstruction of justice, money laundering and political corruption, but organizations also use coercive techniques to obtain information from underworld informants and members of the public.
At the end of the day, Mafiosi will always be seen as a powerful force within modern day society. While the level of criminal activity is much less than it was in Don Vito's time, the Mafiosi of today still continue to retain an air of mystery and allure. Despite the negative attention the Mafia has received throughout the years, it is undeniable that their story, dedication to loyalty and commitment to secrecy remain an interesting part of our history and will continue to capture the minds of both scholars and enthusiasts alike.
