The Edict of Nantes, also known as the Edict of Tolerance, was a royal decree issued by King Henry IV of France on April 13, 1598. This edict granted religious freedom to the Huguenots, who were French Protestants, and put an end to the Wars of Religion that had plagued France for over three decades.

The Edict of Nantes was a landmark in European history and set a precedent for religious tolerance in other countries.
