The Kuomintang, also known as the Chinese Nationalist Party, is a political party in Taiwan that was founded in 1912. The party has a long and complex history, and has played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of Taiwan and China.

Originally founded by Sun Yat-sen, the Kuomintang was a revolutionary party that sought to overthrow the Qing dynasty and establish a democratic republic in China. Chiang then became the leader of the Kuomintang, and he ruled China until the Communist Party of China defeated the Kuomintang in 1949.

After the defeat of the Kuomintang in China, the party fled to Taiwan and established a government-in-exile. The Kuomintang ruled Taiwan under martial law until 1987, when it lifted the martial law and began to transition to a democratic system of government. Today, the Kuomintang is one of the two major political parties in Taiwan, along with the Democratic Progressive Party.
