Sakamoto Kyu, also known as Kyu Sakamoto, was a Japanese singer and actor who rose to fame in the 1960s. He is best known for his hit song "Sukiyaki," which became a chart-topping hit in the United States and around the world.

Sakamoto was born on December 10, 1941, in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. He began his career as a child actor before turning his attention to music. In 1958, he joined the pop group The Drifters, but left the group two years later to pursue a solo career.

Sakamoto's breakthrough came in 1961 with the release of "Ue o Muite Arukou" (I Look Up As I Walk), which was later released in the United States as "Sukiyaki." The song became an international hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States and topping charts in several other countries.

Despite the success of "Sukiyaki," Sakamoto struggled to replicate its success with subsequent releases. He continued to record music and act in films throughout the 1960s, but his popularity waned. In the 1970s, he shifted his focus to television, hosting several variety shows and appearing in dramas.

Tragically, Sakamoto's life was cut short in 1985 when he died in a plane crash at the age of 43. The crash, which also claimed the lives of 520 other passengers and crew members, remains one of the deadliest single-aircraft accidents in history.

Despite his short life and career, Sakamoto left an indelible mark on the music industry with his iconic song "Sukiyaki." His legacy continues to live on through his music, which remains popular with audiences around the world.
