Fear is a feeling that we as humans understand and experience. It is involuntary, primal and intense. But there is a feeling beyond fear, a feeling that transcends from terror to extreme terror. It’s a feeling that causes sweaty palms, a racing heart, a feeling of dread and anxiety. A feeling so deep and consuming it paralyzes us and takes us to a place of darkness.

Experts describe extreme terror as a fear that is so intense, it causes the brain to release a multitude of hormones to prepare us for fight or flight. In some cases, fear reaches such an intensity it can totally shut down our body and mind, leaving us feeling completely and utterly helpless.

There are many situations in life that can cause extreme terror. It can be something as mundane as being stuck in a crowded subway car or as extreme as facing death. In either case, the feeling can overwhelm its victims to a point where rational thinking and actions become impossible. For some, extreme terror results in the loss of speech, for others the ability to move.

It goes without saying that those who experience extreme terror are often traumatized by their experience. It is not something that can easily be forgotten. Nights can become shadowed with fear and it can even leave the sufferer with lasting mental health issues.

In addition to physical symptoms, extreme terror can make those affected feel emotionally drained, leaving them feeling helpless, numb, powerless and disorientated. It can be devastating and lead to anxiety, depression and can even result in post traumatic stress disorder.

No one should ever have to experience extreme terror, but it’s unfortunately very real. It can be triggered by a person’s environment, or even their thoughts and their imagination. Knowing how to manage the fear and how to keep our thoughts in a positive headspace is a key to avoiding it.

It’s important to remember that despite how consuming and intense it can be, extreme terror is only a feeling. It can’t hurt you and the power it holds over you is nothing more than what you give it yourself. Remember that if you ever do find yourself in such a situation, your will to survive will far outweigh your fears.
