A thousand sails, or qianfan in Chinese, is the story of a young man's journey to find the truth about life and himself. It takes place in a fictional country called Honan, a place of cultural and religious persity. The protagonist, Dai, is a boy from a humble fishing village on the coast, whose only ambition is to make his parents proud by someday joining the navy. However, a fateful encounter with an old man named Ye Dafeng turns his simple life upside down.

Ye Dafeng reveals to Dai that he is a Qianshi, a magical being that can use the power of the wind to escape from death and travel through time. To protect Dai from the dangers that follow, Ye Dafeng sends him on a quest to seek the seven fantastical pieces of the thousand sails.
